Cell Phone News – Sprint Now Offering 3G-Capable Airave Femtocell

Sprint has begun shipping an EV-DO 3G version of its Airave femtocell to select customers. Sprint spokesperson Mark Elliott confirmed for Fierce Wireless, “Sprint is offering the Airave Access Point for customers who have specific in-building coverage issues. Each customer situation is reviewed independently to determine whether the customer would qualify and benefit from Airave use. This is an updated Airave model, and does support Sprint 3G (EV-DO) data speeds.” The Airave is a miniature ih-home cell tower that uses a customer’s existing broadband service (rather than Sprint’s cellular network) to connect to Sprint’s backhaul network. Customers can qualify to get the Airave for free, though it must be returned if the customer deactivates their Sprint service. There is no monthly cost associated with the Airave, which originally went on sale in 2008.
